Kindergarten Winter Math Centers-Patterning

Hello/Bonjour!

I hope you enjoyed my series on Christmas math centers. With this post I would like to introduce you to the next series of centers- Winter centers! I will be showing you different ideas and materials I will be using that you could use as an inspiration for your own centers. I would love to know in the comments what ideas and materials you love to use this time of year. This week I will be focusing on patterning!

For your convenience I have linked the materials used to Amazon where you can find the same/similar items in this post. I do have to say that by using these link to make a purchase I will also receive a small commission from Amazon with no additional cost to you. This will help me continue to create more exciting content for teachers.

I love the versatility of using gems in the classroom-they can be used for patterning, counting, adding, making shape and letter outlines, exploration and play! I love these winter coloured gems, they sparkle like real jewels and entice little hands to explore with them. You can find similar light blue and clear gems on Amazon here , or dark blue ones here .

These snowflakes were the perfect find for winter centers- patterning, sorting, counting, addition, oh my! I'm sure students will be begging to explore with these and use them in play during free exploration time. The different sizes and colours are great for students to expand on their knowledge of making patterns.

These glittery Styrofoam balls are fun and sparkly- but next time I will use something to contain them! They are good for making patterns with though and I can see myself using them for counting and for fine motor activities- they would be perfect to pick up with tweezers. I have mini coloured jingle bells for my Christmas centers so I couldn't resist these beautiful winter themed bells. So pretty and they make a fun sound as students put them into patterns. Using different sizes and textures will challenge students' understanding of patterning. You can find similar jingle bells with the snowflake cut-outs on Amazon here .

This center was all about recycling- the pompoms and confetti were all from sets I had bought for Christmas centers! When you are a teacher you have to find a way to stretch your materials and find a way to use them in different ways, especially ones that you bought with your own money. This center still turned out great and the different materials made for some interesting and complex patterns.

Just like in the previous center, using items of different colours, shapes and sizes will challenge students' thinking about the many ways that patterns can be created.

I bought these foam snowflakes to use for crafts but I decided I could use them for centers as well! In this center I asked students to create a design for their snowflake and I had a student come up to me and tell me that he had made a pattern on his snowflake! I love that he could take the skills and previous knowledge learned and apply it in other areas. You can find similar foam snowflakes on Amazon here .

In January I also like to work on positional words with my students so I created this math around the room set. Just like write the room, students go around the room searching, learning and recording the words. There are also puzzles, worksheets and fun colour by word pictures to consolidate learning. The set is available in English and French, to check out  the English version click the picture below, for the French version click here .
