Back to School Math and Literacy Part 1- Math Centers

Hello/Bonjour!

It's that time again...back to school! As much as teachers want to enjoy their summer, we know that getting things accomplished during the summer break makes going back that much smoother.

That is why I like to prep and organize activities for the first few weeks so I can concentrate on learning about my new students, observing and assessing their abilities and laying the groundwork for a successful year.

These literacy and math back to school centers are engaging for students and are available in English and French! I will use pictures of both sets throughout the post but the sets are the same no matter the language.

Math Centers

These centers are easy to prep- just cut out the pieces and laminate so you can use them year after year! Since they cover basic skills they can be used to assess students' knowledge, serve as a review or re-inforce skills in slower learners throughout the year.

Students use their numeracy skills to count on to find the missing number

Students can write or use manipulatives (jewels, pom-poms, stickers....) to practice representing numbers on a ten frame.

Students can draw or use manipulatives (cubes, counters...) to practice the concept of more/less/the same. This is great to use as a teacher led center.

I like to set out these centres throughout the week with some hands on centers like counting bears, cubes, play-doh number mats etc. I like that these centers can be used in small groups with the teacher as well. It is easy to check to see if students are on the right track.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this Back to School series when I talk about using write the room and math around the room sets. Find Part 2 here
