Back to School Math and Literacy Part 2- Write the room and Math around the room

Hello/Bonjour!

Welcome to part 2 of my back to school math and literacy series. In my last post which you can read here, I talked about how to use my back to school math centres in the first few weeks of school.

Today I am talking about an exciting series of sets that your students will love! Students enjoy these around the room sets as they are active, engaging and fun!

Write the Room

In this back to school set students will practice reading and writing easy school words as they find them around the room and record on their recording sheet. The words will be re-inforced as they complete the accompanying word puzzles, colour by word pictures and worksheets. I have heard from many teachers how much students love completing the colour by word pictures!

To make these sets even more fun I like to set out special markers or necklaces that the students who are going around the room get to use. It makes it more exciting to them and it allows me to see who is walking around with a purpose. I always have a write the room center available and as the week goes on I will put out the accompanying activities. By the end of the week they will have an excellent grasp of the vocabulary. After we are done with the set I will use the word wall cards on my word wall to use while doing other writing activities throughout the year.

Math around the room

Similar to the write the room set, the math around the room set gets students up and moving around as they count the room. This set actually comes with two sets of cards so you can choose depending on your students' skill level or what you want them to practice. One set of cards gets students counting objects one-by-one up to 20. The second set of cards has students counting to 50 using ten frames. For extra practice this set also includes counting puzzles and colour by counting pictures. Whichever set of cards you use, students can record their answer either by using numbers or words (I love the idea of extra literacy practice).

I like to put this set out as a math centre with other items such as pieces from my math centres set and other counting activities such as dominos, counting bears, counting cubes etc.
