Fall Kindergarten sensory, literacy and math activities

It's finally Fall!

Ok, it does not feel like fall yet, but those leaves will be changing soon and I want to share with you some Fall ideas you might want to consider this season in your classroom. These have a sensory aspect and have the extra bonus of the ability to include literacy and math practice as well.

I love activities that involve a sensory aspect. This Fall goop was slimy and smelled delicious! The wax paper kept the messiness to a minimum. It also allowed letters and words to be drawn in the goop for extra writing practice (the mixture needs to be thin enough). I used this activity during literacy centers by putting out Fall word cards from my Fall write the room set (see below) that could be written in the goop.

I used an easy mixture of flour, water and orange paint. The texture changes depending on how much liquid you use.  Food colouring did not get the colour vibrant enough but the paint was perfect and it was washable so it easily came off their hands. It did not stick much with the water mixture anyways.

I added cinnamon to the mixture and it smelled amazing! It took the sensory experience to the next level!

I use this Fall write the room activity during literacy centers to introduce Fall words. The word cards can also be used on a word wall. There are lots of other fun activities included in the set like color by word pictures and word puzzles. You can check out the English version here and the French version here.

One year we had a farmer donate pumpkins and everyone had a pumpkin to create a jack-o-lantern with. They drew the faces on and this tired teacher had to carve all of them! Oh well, at least they had fun and thats all that matters.

Cleaning out a pumpkin is a fun and slimy sensory experience and it is perfect as a learning tool to encourage observations and discussion.

Each student at the table took turns scooping out some of the insides with their hands and with a spoon for some fine motor skill practice.

All that hard work pays off as the seeds can be used as math manipulatives or for gluing onto art projects. It is also fun to roast them and let students have a taste of their hard work.

If you are looking for more math fun I love to use this shape around the room set to get students recognizing shapes and their names. They hunt around the room to find the shapes and record the words.  There are also color by shape pictures included for extra fun. You can find this set here or click the image below (available in French only at this time).

Thanks for reading! Have an amazing fall season!
